Nexperia, a semiconductor company, has announced the release of several new MOSFETs to further expand its range of discrete switching solutions for various applications across multiple end markets. The products launched include 100 V application-specific MOSFETs (ASFETs) for PoE, eFuse, and relay replacement applications in a DFN2020 package, which reduces the size by 60%, and the 40 V NextPowerS3 MOSFETs with improved electromagnetic compatibility (EMC).
PoE switches typically have up to 48 ports, with each port requiring 2 MOSFETs for protection. With up to 96 MOSFETs on a single PCB, solutions that minimize device package sizes are highly attractive. For this reason, Nexperia has released 100 V PoE ASFETs in a 2 mm x 2 mm DFN2020 package, which occupy 60% less space compared to previous versions in LFPAK33 packaging. A key feature of these devices is their ability to limit surge currents to protect PoE ports while safely managing fault conditions. To address this, Nexperia has enhanced the Safe Operating Area(SOA) of these devices by three times, with only a very minimal increase in RDS(on). These ASFETs are also suitable for battery management, Wi-Fi hotspots, 5G small cells, and CCTV applications, and can replace mechanical relays in smart thermostats, among other applications.
EMC-related issues caused by MOSFET switching typically emerge late in the product development cycle, potentially leading to additional R&D costs and delays in market release. Typical solutions include using more expensive MOSFETs with lower RDS(on) to slow down switching speeds and absorb excessive voltage ringing, or installing external capacitor buffer circuits, which however increases component count. Nexperia has optimized its 40 V NextPowerS3 MOSFETs to deliver similar EMC performance to that achievable with external buffer circuits, while also offering higher efficiency. These MOSFETs are packaged in LFPAK56, suitable for switch converters and motor controllers across a range of applications.
